Over 40’s Bonspiel

Orwell laplayers at the Over 40s Bonspiel

The first Kinross over 40’s Bonspiel took place from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th January 2017. 16 teams from all over the UK took part, including a lady who flew over from Canada just for the event.

The competition was stiff, and the games very competitive. Teams were divided into 2 groups and played 3 games on a Schenkel system. The top 2 teams in each section qualified for the high road, the 3rd and 4th for the low road, and the remaining 4 played in the bonspiel challenge.

The overall winners were the Musketeers rink of Alan Chalmers (skip) with Graham Cormack, Iain Cormack and Paul Baughan. Runners up were the current Senior Ladies World Champions Jackie Lockhart (skip) with Christine cannon, Margaret Richardson and Isobel Hannen.

An Orwell Ladies team of Liz Glennie (skip) with Maggie Scott, Angela Wilcox and Eileen Thomas qualified 3rd in their group and went on to the low road semi final. They started well but the opposition came back and the result was a peel. Unfortunately there was no time for an extra end, so it was decided on a draw shot which they lost by only a few inches.

Another Orwell team of Susan Scougal (skip) with Sue Cameron, Robin Kay and Caroline Liddle went on to the Bonspiel Challenge where ends, not shots counted. It was very close but Tommy Campbell just won putting them in runner up position.

The dinner and ceilidh at the Windelstrae on the Saturday evening was a great success, as was the whole weekend.
