Sue Jones – An Appreciation

Members of Orwell Ladies were saddened by the sudden passing of sister curler Sue Jones on 24 December 2018.

Sue and her husband Tony came to settle in Milnathort in 1986, having lived in many different places until then due to Tony’s naval career. In the same year, introduced by Jane Smith, Sue joined Orwell Ladies. She was formally initiated at a curlers’ court in February 1988.

Sue took on the role of club Secretary from 1993 to 1996 and was also on the committee in 1999 and 2001.

Sue was a regular playing member of Orwell Ladies for the best part of 30 years, until five years ago, and even then, continued to play occasionally as a reserve and in the opening and closing bonspiels. She was a staunch supporter of the club, hardly ever missing a social function.

Sue was also an active member of Milnathort Golf Club, taking on the job of Ladies’ Captain in 1992 and 1999 and was also Handicap Secretary for many years.

Sue made a huge contribution to the local community, working with the WRVS in the café at Perth Royal Infirmary and Meals on Wheels and Books on Wheels.

A well-attended service to commemorate Sue’s life was held at Perth Crematorium on 9 January 2019. Sue was predeceased by Tony in 2011 and is survived by her children, Sarah and Peter, and grandchildren Georgina and Katherine.
